Yamashita Egi-OH TR 3.0 Squid Jigs – 21g
The Yamashita Egi-OH TR 3.0 21g is a beautifully made Japanese squid jig designed for fishing close to the seabed, working deeper water and fishing on the drop. At 21g, it's a slightly lighter, more subtle alternative to the heavier #3.5 ~ 27g version.
Here in Jersey, one of our favourite ways of fishing these jigs is a technique we call "bottom dragging", and these Yamashita TR jigs are particularly well suited to it.
Rather than constantly lifting and jerking the jig, we simply allow it to reach the seabed and then retrieve it very slowly, literally dragging it along the bottom. It's a remarkably effective way of catching squid, particularly when they're feeding close to the seabed and aren't interested in chasing a faster-moving jig.
One of the clever features of the Egi-OH TR is the position of the line attachment point on top of the jig's head. This helps keep the rear of the jig, where the squid-catching prongs are located, tilted upwards as it moves along the bottom. It doesn't make the jig snag-proof, but it certainly helps keep those exposed hooks away from some of the obstacles below.
Yamashita Egi-OH TR Features
-
21g Weight: A slightly lighter presentation than the 27g version, ideal when you want something a little more subtle.
-
Top-Mounted Line Attachment: Helps maintain the jig's fishing attitude, particularly when working slowly along the seabed.
-
Hydro Fin: The small stabilising fin towards the rear helps keep the jig straight and balanced in current or swell, particularly important when fishing on the drop.
-
Warm Jacket: Yamashita's special fabric covering is designed to absorb and retain warmth, helping imitate the thermal characteristics of natural prey.
-
Glow 490: Yamashita's specialist glow technology uses a wavelength developed to appeal to squid.
-
Double Crown Hooks: Sharp, exposed prongs designed to catch and hold squid when they grab the jig.
Mick's Tip – Bottom Dragging for Squid
One of the most effective techniques we use here in Jersey is also one of the simplest.
Cast your jig out, allow it to settle on the bottom, and then wind it back very, very slowly. You're not trying to make the jig dart about; you're simply keeping it moving gently along the seabed.
The position of the attachment point on these TR jigs makes them particularly good for this style of fishing, helping to keep the crown hooks raised rather than constantly digging into the bottom.
Of course, you can also fish them with more traditional lifts and drops, particularly in deeper water or from a boat.
If you enjoy squid fishing, these are well worth having in your jig collection, especially when the squid are feeding hard on the bottom.
