The Xorus Frosty has been one of my favourite surface lures for many years, particularly when I'm fishing for bass in calmer conditions and shallower water.

At 125mm but weighing only 16g, the Frosty gives you a slimmer, lighter presentation than the Patchinko and is a fantastic choice when predatory fish are concentrating on smaller baitfish. It has a lovely surface action that's easy to work with small twitches of the rod, making it an extremely enjoyable lure to fish.

One of the things I've always particularly liked about the Frosty is its higher-pitched rattle. In my experience, that sharper sound seems to work amazingly well in shallower water, where it can attract attention and provoke some very aggressive surface takes.

For me personally, the Frosty really comes into its own on calmer days. When there isn't much chop on the water and I want something a little more subtle than a larger or heavier surface lure, this is one I have a lot of confidence in.

Like the Patchinko, the Frosty is fitted with a Decoy T-S21 T-shaped treble on the belly, which helps reduce the hook sitting too tightly against the body of the lure.

I've been selling the Frosty since the early days of modern UK surface lure fishing, and after all these years it's still a lure I genuinely enjoy using myself.

Mick's Tip

Calm day and shallow water — that's when I really like the Frosty. Its lighter profile and higher-pitched rattle seem particularly effective in these conditions. If bass are feeding on smaller bait and I don't need the extra weight and presence of a Patchinko, the Frosty is often the lure I'll reach for.
