The Shimano Stradic FM Spinning Reel – A Benchmark for UK Lure Fishing

When it comes to lure fishing reels in the UK, the Shimano Stradic series has been setting the standard for decades. In fact, my very first proper lure fishing reel was a Shimano Stradic way back in the mid-1990s!

They were fantastic reels back then, and the latest Shimano Stradic FM continues that tradition, offering everything a serious UK lure angler needs for smooth, reliable and hassle-free fishing.

Whether you're targeting bass with hard lures and soft plastics, working metal jigs for pollack, or fishing for other predatory species in fresh or saltwater, the Stradic FM is a superb all-round spinning reel.

Smooth, Powerful and Built for Lure Fishing

The Stradic FM incorporates some of Shimano's most successful reel technologies, giving you a beautifully smooth retrieve, excellent line management and the strength needed when a decent fish comes along.

Shimano's HAGANE Gear and MicroModule II gearing deliver smooth, efficient power transmission, while the INFINITYDRIVE system helps reduce resistance when winding under load.

The addition of INFINITYXROSS technology improves gear durability by distributing pressure across a wider area of the gear teeth, particularly beneficial for anglers who spend long days repeatedly casting and retrieving lures.

Shimano's INFINITYLOOP oscillation system improves line lay on the spool, helping reduce friction as the braid leaves the reel during a cast. Combined with the Anti-Twist Fin, this provides excellent line management, particularly when fishing with modern thin-diameter braided lines.

Ideal for UK Bass Fishing

The Stradic FM is particularly well suited to the type of lure fishing we do around the British coastline.

It's light enough to balance nicely on modern lure rods, yet has the gearing, drag performance and overall strength to cope with powerful fish in demanding conditions.

Whether you're walking a surface lure, twitching a shallow-diving minnow or working a soft plastic through rough ground, the Stradic FM gives you the control and responsiveness needed to fish effectively.

Mick's Tip

I've been fishing with Shimano Stradic reels since the mid-1990s, and there's a good reason this range has remained so popular for so long.

For me, the Stradic has always represented that sweet spot between performance, reliability and value for money. You get much of the technology found in Shimano's considerably more expensive spinning reels, without having to spend Stella money!

For general UK bass fishing, particularly with 7ft to 9ft lure rods, the 3000 and 4000 sizes are excellent choices.

If you enjoy working surface lures, twitching minnows or fishing soft plastics, I'd certainly consider one of the higher-speed versions. That faster line pick-up makes a real difference when taking up slack between movements of the rod.

The Shimano Stradic FM is a reel I'd happily recommend to anyone looking for a high-quality spinning reel that will give them years of enjoyable lure fishing.
