Savage Gear ISP Seeker 16g – Shore Jigging Metal Lure
In my opinion, the Savage Gear ISP Seeker, along with its bigger brother the Surf Seeker, is simply one of the best metal lures available for shore jigging.
I've fished these myself from our beaches here in Jersey, and they really are superb little metals. They cast beautifully, flutter through the water with a fantastic action and, most importantly, they catch fish!
The 16g ISP Seeker is the lightest of the three weights we stock and is a brilliant choice for lighter shore lure fishing, particularly when the fish are feeding on smaller baitfish or you don't need the extra weight of the 23g or 28g versions.
Don't let the lighter weight fool you, though. These little Seekers cast remarkably well for their size, making them ideal for working along beaches, around harbour walls and over shallower rocky ground.
One of the things I particularly like about the Seeker is its action. On a steady retrieve it produces an enticing swimming movement, but when you pause and allow it to sink, it flutters beautifully, flashing as it falls and imitating a struggling baitfish.
The lighter 16g version has a slower sink rate than its heavier brothers, giving you a little more time to work the lure through shallower water or keep it above weed and rough ground.
It's a great option for bass, pollack and other predatory fish, particularly when they're feeding on smaller baitfish and you want a slightly more subtle presentation.
You can fish it with a simple straight retrieve, vary the speed, add a few twitches or allow it to flutter down between lifts of the rod tip. Sometimes just a little pause is enough to trigger a take.
Mick's Tip
I've used these Seekers myself from our beaches here in Jersey, and one thing I personally prefer is to swap the treble hook for the single hook supplied with the lure.
I find a single hook much better when fishing over snaggy ground or when there's weed about, as it's less likely to catch the bottom or pick up weed.
I also prefer the hook hold once a fish is hooked. In my experience, a single hook gives a better, more secure hold, particularly when playing fish through the surf.
With the lighter 16g Seeker, I'd also make the most of its slower sink rate. It's a lovely lure for working shallower water where a heavier metal might sink too quickly.
Why We Rate the ISP Seeker 16g
-
Excellent casting performance for a relatively light metal lure.
-
Beautiful fluttering and flashing action on the drop.
-
Ideal for lighter shore jigging and shallow-water fishing.
-
Slower sink rate than the heavier Seekers.
-
Effective with straight retrieves, pauses and lifts.
-
Supplied with a single hook option for fishing around weed and rough ground.
-
Excellent for bass, pollack and other saltwater predators.
If you need a little more weight or casting distance, have a look at the 23g ISP Seeker, which is a superb all-round option, or the 28g ISP Seeker for deeper water and windier conditions.
For heavier shore fishing and maximum casting distance, the Savage Gear Surf Seeker range is another favourite of mine.
Weight: 16g
Fishing style: Light shore jigging, beach casting and saltwater lure fishing.
My verdict: A cracking little metal lure. It casts far better than you'd expect for 16g, has a beautiful fluttering action and is a brilliant choice when you want to fish a little lighter.
