Savage Gear Psycho Sprat 28g – Light Casting & Vertical Jigging Metal Lure
The Savage Gear Psycho Sprat is one of those metal jigs that I originally bought for my own fishing trips, and after using them in Panama, I was so impressed that I decided to start stocking them at Mr Fish Jersey.
And the little 28g Psycho Sprat turned out to be an absolute cracker!
I used this weight extensively in Panama, catching countless fish on it, including jack crevalle, bonito, sierra mackerel and houndfish, with some fish weighing up to 20lb.
That's fantastic sport on relatively light spinning tackle, and it really showed me just how effective these little metal jigs can be.
The 28g Psycho Sprat is a brilliant choice for lighter cast jigging and light vertical jigging. It's compact, casts extremely well for its weight and is ideal when fish are feeding on smaller baitfish.
One of its biggest advantages is its versatility. You can cast it towards feeding fish and work it back with a mixture of fast retrieves, twitches and pauses, or drop it beneath the boat and work it vertically with short lifts and controlled falls.
The Psycho Sprat has a lively, darting action when worked through the water, with an enticing flash and flutter as it falls. This makes it a particularly effective lure when predatory fish are chasing small baitfish.
Although I originally bought these for tropical fishing, they're also a great option for lighter saltwater lure fishing here in the UK and Channel Islands, particularly for bass, pollack and other predatory species.
Proven in Panama
There's nothing quite like fishing light tackle in tropical waters, especially when you never know what's going to grab your lure next!
The 28g Psycho Sprat gave us some brilliant fishing in Panama, with everything from hard-fighting jack crevalle and bonito to toothy sierra mackerel and houndfish.
We caught countless fish on these little jigs, including some up to 20lb, which is seriously good fun on lighter spinning gear.
It was this sort of fishing that convinced me the Psycho Sprat range deserved a place in our shop.
Mick's Tip
Don't underestimate a small metal jig, especially when fishing for powerful tropical species.
I used the 28g Psycho Sprat in Panama for both casting and light vertical jigging, and it proved incredibly effective on a wide variety of fish.
I particularly like having a smaller metal available when fish are feeding on little baitfish or when I want to enjoy some sport on lighter tackle.
Try varying your retrieve. A faster retrieve can be deadly when fish are actively chasing bait, while short lifts and pauses allow the lure to dart and flutter through the water.
And remember, you don't always need a big lure to catch a decent fish. We had fish up to 20lb on these little 28g Psycho Sprats!
