Savage Gear Psycho Sprat 60g – Casting & Vertical Jigging Metal Lure
The Savage Gear Psycho Sprat is one of those metal jigs that has really impressed me, and there's a good story behind why we now stock them at Mr Fish Jersey.
I originally brought these lures in for myself and a few friends to take to Panama, where we wanted something suitable for both casting and light vertical jigging.
Well, they performed incredibly well!
We had some fantastic fishing with them, and my personal highlight was catching a 20kg Broomtail Grouper on a Psycho Sprat. That's a serious fish on a relatively small metal jig, and it certainly gave me plenty of confidence in these lures! I did change the hook from the standard though, but that is normal practice when fishing tropical not matter what the lure.
The 60g Psycho Sprat is a superb choice when you want a compact, relatively heavy metal jig that can be cast a good distance or worked vertically beneath the boat.
It's an extremely versatile style of lure. You can cast it towards feeding fish and work it back with a combination of retrieves, lifts and pauses, or drop it down and fish it vertically with short, sharp lifts and controlled falls.
That versatility makes it a fantastic option for both tropical fishing and our own waters around Jersey.
Proven in Panama – And Now in Jersey!
After seeing how well these lures performed in Panama, I decided to start stocking them in the shop.
And they've certainly proved themselves here too!
One of our commercial bass anglers in Jersey has had excellent results this year using both the 45g and 60g Psycho Sprats, fishing them in much the same way we did in Panama, either casting or working them vertically.
He's had so much success with them that they've become extremely popular with other anglers here in Jersey.
It's always good when a lure you've had great results with abroad turns out to be just as useful back home.
Mick's Tip
Don't think of the Psycho Sprat as just another casting metal.
I originally chose these for Panama because I wanted a lure that could do two jobs: cast towards fish or be dropped vertically beneath the boat.
That's still how I like to fish them.
The 60g is particularly useful when you need a little more weight to get down to the fish or maintain contact with the lure in deeper water and tidal flow.
Try varying the retrieve with short lifts, faster bursts and pauses, and don't overlook fishing it vertically. These lures have already proved to me that they're capable of catching some seriously impressive fish!
And if you need convincing, my 20kg Broomtail Grouper from Panama is a pretty good example of what they can do!
