Savage Gear Psycho Sprat 45g – Casting & Vertical Jigging Metal Lure
The Savage Gear Psycho Sprat is one of those metal jigs that I originally bought for my own fishing, only to discover just how good they really are!
I first brought these lures in for myself and a few friends to take to Panama, where we wanted something that could be used for both cast jigging and light vertical jigging.
Well, they turned out to be absolutely brilliant!
We had some fantastic fishing with them, and my personal highlight was catching a 20kg Broomtail Grouper on a Psycho Sprat. That certainly gave me plenty of confidence in these little metal jigs, and after seeing how well they performed, I decided we had to start stocking them at Mr Fish Jersey.
The 45g Psycho Sprat is a fantastic all-round weight, offering an excellent balance between casting distance, sink rate and lure control.
It's heavy enough to cast a good distance and work effectively in deeper water, but still light enough to enjoy fishing on relatively light spinning tackle.
One of the great things about the Psycho Sprat is that it isn't limited to one fishing technique. You can cast it towards feeding fish and work it back with lifts, twitches and changes of speed, or simply drop it beneath the boat and fish it vertically.
This makes it an incredibly versatile metal jig for targeting bass, pollack and a wide variety of other predatory species.
From Panama to Jersey Bass Fishing!
The success we had with these lures in Panama was impressive enough, but what's been particularly interesting is how well they've performed back here in Jersey.
One of our local commercial bass anglers has had an excellent season using the 45g and 60g Psycho Sprats, fishing them much the same way we did abroad, either casting or working them vertically.
He's had such good results that he's helped make the Psycho Sprat extremely popular with other anglers here in Jersey.
And when someone who fishes for bass commercially puts that much confidence in a lure, it's certainly worth paying attention!
Mick's Tip
Don't limit the Psycho Sprat to just casting or vertical jigging — it's brilliant at both.
That's exactly why I originally chose these lures for Panama.
The 45g is a lovely weight when you want a metal jig that casts well but isn't quite as heavy as the 60g version. It's particularly useful when you want a little more control over the lure or a slightly slower fall.
Try working it with a mixture of short lifts, faster retrieves and pauses. When fishing vertically, vary the height and speed of your lifts rather than simply winding it straight back up.
And don't be afraid to experiment. These lures have proved themselves on some seriously powerful fish in Panama and are now doing a fantastic job on bass here in Jersey.
Why We Rate the Psycho Sprat 45g
-
Excellent for both cast jigging and light vertical jigging.
-
Great balance of casting distance, weight and lure control.
-
Effective with lifts, drops, twitches and varied retrieves.
-
Proven during our own fishing trips to Panama.
-
Excellent results from a commercial bass angler here in Jersey.
-
A superb option for bass, pollack and tropical predatory fish.
If you need a little more weight for deeper water, stronger tidal flow or additional casting distance, have a look at the 60g Psycho Sprat.
For lighter tackle and shallower water, the 28g Psycho Sprat is another excellent option.
