PENN Battalion III Popping 7ft 8in 130lb Class
The PENN Battalion III Popping 7ft 8in 130lb is a seriously pokey popping rod designed for anglers looking for plenty of stopping power without spending a fortune on a tuna casting outfit.
I have just tested this rod myself with a Shimano Stella SW 18000 and, to be honest, I was really impressed with how lovely it was to cast. I wasn't actually fishing at the time, simply casting a selection of Malosi poppers and stickbaits to see how the rod performed and how it felt with a big fixed-spool reel.
For the money, I think it's incredible.
What immediately impressed me was where the power seems to sit in the blank. It's a parabolic but powerful rod, loading nicely through the cast rather than feeling like an overly stiff broom handle. Once you lean into it, though, you can feel there's a serious amount of power further down the blank — exactly where you want it when you're connected to a big bluefin tuna.
Mick's Tip
Having now cast this rod with my Stella 18000, I think PENN have got the action very right. It's pokey, there's loads of power in all the right places, yet it still loads beautifully when casting a popper or stickbait.
Obviously, casting one and actually fighting a bluefin on one are two different things, so I'm looking forward to hearing what our customers think once they've hooked and landed tuna on it. From my initial test though, this feels like an awful lot of bluefin rod for the money.
