The latest Shimano Miravel 4000A is a cracking lightweight spinning reel for anglers who want the smoothness, balance and performance of Shimano's more expensive lure fishing reels without spending a fortune.

Part of Shimano's renowned Magnumlite family, the Miravel is designed to be exceptionally light, with a beautifully smooth rotation that makes it a pleasure to use for long sessions of lure fishing.

For UK bass anglers, the 4000 size is a particularly good choice. It offers an excellent balance of size, weight and line capacity, making it ideal for fishing with modern 7ft to 9ft lure rods, whether you're working surface plugs, shallow diving minnows or soft plastics.

Mick's Tip

I love the new Miravel 4000A. Having handled both versions, I reckon the line lay on this new model is even better than the original, which is always something I look closely at when using modern braided lines.

The other thing that really impresses me is the new one-piece bail arm. Not so many years ago, this was the sort of feature you'd only find on Shimano reels costing well over £200, so it's fantastic to see it appearing on reels at this price.

For me, the 4000A is an excellent choice for UK bass fishing, especially when paired with a decent lightweight lure rod. It's light, smooth and has the sort of features that make you wonder why you'd need to spend considerably more.

An excellent reel for the money, and one I'd happily recommend for everyday bass and general lure fishing.
