Penn Squall 50 VSW 2-Speed – SQL50VSW
The Penn Squall 50 VSW 2-Speed has become a bit of a proven workhorse for us here in Jersey. We have sold a lot of these reels since the return of our bluefin tuna fishery, including to commercial fishermen who have genuinely put them through their paces. They have proved themselves to be a tough, dependable reel capable of handling serious fish without the price tag of some of the more expensive big-game reels.
This is a proper 50lb-class lever drag reel, ideally suited to UK bluefin tuna fishing as well as shark fishing and heavy big-game use abroad.
One of the features I particularly like is the Quick-Shift 2-Speed system. Changing between high and low gear is quick and straightforward during the fight. High gear allows you to recover line when the fish changes direction or comes towards the boat, while dropping into low gear gives you considerably more cranking power when a big tuna is digging deep underneath you.
Penn uses its proven Dura-Drag system, technology developed through its International big-game reels, giving a smooth and powerful drag even when you're putting serious pressure on a fish.
The Squall uses a lightweight graphite frame and side plates rather than a heavy all-metal construction. This helps keep weight down while also offering excellent resistance to corrosion – an important consideration for a reel that's going to spend its life around saltwater.
Internally you get stainless steel main and pinion gears, four stainless steel bearings and a double-dog anti-reverse system, while the forged and machined aluminium spool provides the enormous line capacity needed for tuna and other big-game fishing.

We know these reels work on bluefin because our customers have been doing it with them. We have supplied plenty of Squall 50 VSWs for the Jersey bluefin fishery, including reels that have gone to commercial boats where tackle gets used hard. For somebody looking for a powerful 50-class 2-speed tuna reel without stepping up to the cost of a Penn International, the Squall 50 VSW takes some beating for the money.

If products are faulty or do not conform to the description, you may return them within 28 days of receipt and you will be entitled to a replacement or full refund.

We test every product returned. If it is found not to be faulty it will be returned to you with a postage and insurance charge not exceeding £3.95.
