Description
Berkley Big Game Monofilament Leader – 110yd Spools
The Berkley Big Game Monofilament Leader is a tough, reliable and surprisingly supple heavy-duty nylon leader, ideal for UK bluefin tuna fishing, tropical big game fishing, trolling, spreader bar rigs and heavy shock leaders.
Berkley Trilene Big Game monofilament has earned an excellent reputation among anglers worldwide for its strength, toughness and abrasion resistance. Unlike some of the very stiff, extra-hard monofilament leaders available, Big Game remains relatively soft and manageable, even in the heavier breaking strains.
With a generous 110 yards (approximately 100 metres) per spool, it also represents excellent value for anglers making their own leaders, trolling rigs and big game terminal tackle.
Ideal for UK Bluefin Tuna and Tropical Big Game Fishing
With Atlantic bluefin tuna now firmly established as a target species around the British Isles and Channel Islands, having a dependable supply of heavy monofilament is more useful than ever.
Berkley Big Game Mono is particularly well suited to:
-
Bluefin tuna fishing – heavy leaders, trolling rigs and rubbing leaders.
-
Spreader bar stingers – ideal for making your own heavy-duty tuna trolling terminal tackle.
-
Tropical fishing – suitable for powerful species encountered in destinations such as Oman and Panama.
-
Hollow-core braid top shots – a supple monofilament option for anglers wanting some stretch between their braid backing and terminal tackle.
-
Shock leaders – useful when a little extra cushioning is desirable during powerful runs and sudden changes of direction.
-
Making your own rigs – the large 110yd spool gives you plenty of material for multiple leaders and trolling setups.
Why Choose a Softer Monofilament Leader?
Many heavy-duty big game leaders are manufactured to be extremely hard and stiff, which can be useful when maximum abrasion resistance is the priority.
However, there are situations where a softer, more supple monofilament is preferable.
Berkley Big Game has a degree of stretch that can help absorb sudden shocks when fighting powerful fish, particularly when used with low-stretch braided mainline.
Its relative suppleness also makes it easier to handle and work with than some of the very hard monofilaments, especially when constructing longer leaders and trolling rigs.

Mick's Tip
I've used Berkley Big Game monofilament on my tropical fishing trips to Oman and Panama, and it's a leader material I've always found dependable.
More recently, I've also used the heavy 400lb version for making stingers for my bluefin tuna spreader bars, where you need a strong, reliable monofilament that is still reasonably easy to work with.
Some of my customers have also used the 130lb and 150lb breaking strains as top-shot leaders with their hollow-core braid, specifically because they prefer a softer monofilament with a little stretch rather than the very stiff, extra-hard leaders commonly used for big game fishing.
There are certainly situations where I would choose a harder leader, particularly around very abrasive structure, but for trolling, making rigs and general big game applications, Berkley Big Game is an excellent option.
And with 110 yards on a spool, it really is fantastic value. There's no need to compromise on your leader material when something this dependable is so reasonably priced.
