Sawamura One Up Shad 6" – 150mm Soft Plastic Paddle Tail
The Sawamura One Up Shad is one of the most popular soft lures in France, and although it has a following here in the UK, I still think it's one of the most underrated paddle tails available!
The big 6" (150mm) version is a fantastic option when you want to present a larger baitfish imitation, particularly for bigger bass, pollack and other predatory fish. It's an excellent size for fishing deeper water, working around reefs and wrecks, or simply when you know there are some decent fish about.
What makes the One Up Shad so special is the incredible softness of the material. Despite its larger size, the paddle tail responds to the slightest movement, producing a lovely natural swimming action even on the slowest retrieves.
This is a real advantage with larger soft lures. You don't have to wind them quickly to get the tail working, allowing you to fish slowly and keep the lure in the strike zone for longer.
The One Up Shad also has its own distinctive scent, very similar to the aniseed-style scent of the legendary Megabass Xlayer. It's another attractive feature of an already outstanding soft lure.
The 6" model can be fished on a conventional jig head or rigged weedless when working around rougher ground. Whether you're casting from the shore or fishing vertically from a boat, it's a very versatile lure with a wonderfully natural action.
Mick's Tip
Don't assume that because this is the biggest One Up Shad, you need to fish it aggressively!
The beauty of these lures is how incredibly well the tail works at low speeds. Try a slow, steady retrieve close to the bottom, particularly around reefs and deeper marks where bigger bass and pollack may be holding.
I'd also experiment with gentle lifts and controlled drops when fishing from a boat, allowing that soft body and paddle tail to do their work.
Choose your jig head weight according to the depth and tide, using just enough weight to maintain control of the lure.
