Sawamura One Up Shad 4" – Soft Plastic Paddle Tail Lure
The Sawamura One Up Shad is one of the best-selling soft lures in France, yet here in the UK I still think it deserves a much bigger following!
The 4" version is a fantastic all-round size for bass fishing, particularly when you want something a little more subtle than the larger 5" and 6" models. It's also a great option for pollack and other predatory fish, whether you're fishing from the shore or a boat.
What makes the One Up Shad so special is the incredible softness of the material. It's one of the most supple paddle tails around, and that means the tail starts working with the slightest movement. Even on the slowest retrieves, it continues to kick away, producing a beautifully natural swimming action.
The lure also has its own distinctive scent, very similar to the aniseed-style scent of the legendary Megabass Xlayer. Another attractive feature of what is already an outstanding soft lure.
The 4" One Up Shad is particularly versatile when it comes to rigging. Fish it on a light jig head for open ground, work it slowly around rocks and gullies, or rig it weedless when you need to explore rougher ground without constantly snagging up.
It's a brilliant size to have in your lure bag, especially when bass are feeding on smaller baitfish or you simply want to scale things down a little.
Mick's Tip
One of the biggest mistakes anglers can make with paddle tails is fishing them too quickly. The beauty of the One Up Shad is that you really don't need to!
Keep your jig head as light as conditions allow and let that incredibly soft tail do the work. A slow, steady retrieve can be all that's needed to bring the lure to life.
My recommended hooks and jig heads for the 4" One Up Shad:
-
Decoy Violence VJ-36 2/0 – For conventional jig head fishing.
-
Xorus Texas Eel 3/0 – For weedless rigging around rough ground.
-
Owner Twist-Lok 3/0 – Another excellent option for weedless fishing.
