Dan Eds on the Tenryu Akuru SP80MH 10-40g

Our "man on the Menai" Dan Eds thoughts on his Tenryu Akuru SP80MH 10-40g

It’s no secret that I’ve been an Ultimate Fishing tart for a good 15 years, and as a result my collection of Tenryu rods has grown during that time. From the classic Injection 73M to the amazing 82MH, they all have a certain type of fishing style that they are the master of.

Now with my style of fishing being predominantly soft plastics on jig heads bounced over some rough ground in the strong currents of the mighty Menai Straits, I was very excited to hear about the new Tenryu Akuru range designed specifically for fishing with soft plastics.

I currently have the Akuru SP86MH (14-55g) and  SP80MH (10-40g) in my armoury, and where I’m intending to fish that day and what lures I intend on using will depend on which of those I will take with me.

The 80MH is just perfect for those calmer days when you’re fishing that little bit more finesse in an estuary or some skinny water environment. A perfect rod for Megabass Spindle worms in both 4 and 5” from belly weighted to jig heads up to 15g.

Again, this rod is perfect for Sawamura one up shads (4 and 5”) with those same weight ranges of hooks and jig heads, as well as the brilliant Madness Madshads in 85 and 100 size on some 10g Xorus Ultiheads. And let’s not forget the Megabass sleeper range of lures. This rod is at home with the 3” dark sleeper in 1/2oz and 3/4oz bounced along the bottom with you being able to feel every bounce and stone the lure touches yet has plenty of back bone to set that hook when a hungry Bass sucks that lure up. As I’ve stated a few times this is essential with the sleeper range as fish tend to hook in the top of the mouth.

Again, tie a Sleeper Gill onto this rod and get that retrieval speed right you will feel every tail thump on the retrieve. I just need to master the Craw more on it this year.

It will happily fish surface lures should need arise too, but for me personally I find an Injection better with hard lures.

So, there you go a quick summing up of my thoughts on the Akuru SP80 MH. If you want a specialised bit of kit for fishing soft plastics like I do in a more “finesse” style, look no further!
